If the Night Was Made for Love, It Ain't for Keeps

If you're anything like the Future Dr. Mrs. Dr. PGS, you just can't understand why Cosmo doesn't have more tawdry stories about the job market and one-night stands. After all, don't humanities grad students deserve a little salacious trash of their own? Well people, ask and the Chronicle forums will provide: "I Slept With the Head of the SC--Should I Still Apply for the Job?"

(For those looking for something a little more in the Readers' Digest vein, here's "Job-seekers Healed by Animals!")

You need a new post called: "Where have all the good times gone?" Alas, these sorts of stories get lost in the shuffle of the frustrating (albeit important) discussions of, well, other stuff. I wish we could return to better times here....

"Somewhat on-topic, humorous (I hope) tension breaker in this discussion: I just received a PFO letter (my first contact from the department in question)and *in the very same mailing*, I was also asked to send in -- at my expense! -- the requisite card from their affirmative action office! Yeah, I'll get right on that."

I'll add my own absurdity. Following in the footsteps of PGS (well behind those footsteps, of course!), I got no interviews this year (after getting 8 last year; imagine that). So what did I get in the mail on the day I was supposed to fly to Baltimore (yes, I cancelled my trip, been there done that)? Three - count 'em - three EO/AA forms to be filled out, all from schools who had scheduled their APA interviews without me. Yup, gonna fill those out now...hmmm, where did I put those....I can't imagine that I threw them out....

Unless they're making you pay for the postage, why not fill them out? It takes only 30 seconds or so.

Bobcat,

Because in case you didn't notice, anon 11:30 mentioned that s/he DID NOT GET and WOULD NOT BE GETTING an interview from said schools. Why the f**k would s/he fill them out?! Why!? For king, god, and country? Of course, filling them out before a rejection is sent does nothing to change ultimately whether or not we get an interview, but once that rejection letter is in hand, all form of relationship with the school is terminated.

The only reason to send the forms in is if you think that there is good reason for universities to collect this information. But, if you think this, then I do not see why the reasons would not exist regardless of whether you are a finalist.

what anonymous 1:57 said. I suppose anonymous 1:09 could respond, though, that you have reason to send in the forms not because it's important for universities to get that data, but rather because it's courteous to send in forms to people, but that once they reject you, you no longer have a reason to be courteous. I guess I think it's important for the universities to have the data, so that wouldn't sway me, but I can see why others would be convinced by it.

I'm 11:30pm anon.

None of the requests came with pre-postaged envelopes. Even if they had, I still need to post them; that takes, in my case, more than 30 seconds.

But really, does it matter how diverse the applicant pool was? Does the fact that I might contribute to the diversity of the applicant pool (or not) help the process, given the fact that I wasn't interviewed? All things considered, submitting such information might work against non-white non-male candidates, as schools/depts can show they are receiving sufficiently diverse applicant pools, without actually diversifying their departments.

But that's all beside the point. Why the fuck should I care? I got no fucking interviews!!! That's like asking someone who was just fired to fill out an evaluation of the lavatories at the office. Sure, it matters whether the urinals are clean, but why should I give a flying fuck?

I guess I don't agree that getting no interviews is like getting fired--firing seems much more about a person's sucking than not getting interviews. I don't know, I guess I see a difference between not getting hired for a job and getting fired from a job.
