So what are folks doing now to gear up for the job market? And whose advisors are batshit crazy? For my part, I must say that blank faced-doe eyed-text messaging- students have been doing a damn good job of diverting my attention from job market preparation these days. And, of course, this utter lack of preparation is surely going to cost me whatever jobs I may end up applying for this year. And I'm sure the good-not batshit crazy-but invariably uncomfortable moment inducing-advisor and the really fucking great (seriously!) placement committee will certainly let me know once I show up to one of their meetings about preparing for this Fall's market.
How's about the rest of y'all? How are you preparing to ensure that you're going to get the job that I want this year?

I'm glad someone put this question up. i read this blog all last year, and this year I am actually on the market and ready for a ear to vent to.
and - my dissertation is written, thankyouverymuch.
but I am having a hard time picking a writing sample. having it be the absolute best thing I have ever written, and self-contained enough that a bunch of people from a bunch of fields could pick it up and at least understand a bit of it, is kinda intimidating. I have good things to work with, I am just having a hard time deciding what to run with.
and my advisor, who rocks and is not batshit crazy, is out of the country for a couple weeks. sigh.
Although I know you're not supposed to, I'm going to answer your question with a question:
What's the deal with JFP #179? It's been given the strikethrough treatment on the publication schedule. WTF? Did I miss something?
Wait, what's the deal with the JFP? I went to the APA site, and didn't see anything listed either way wrt the upcoming JFP. Quite likely, I am just being stupid, so could someone else weigh in?
anon 6.30 means this, i suppose: http://www.apaonline.org/publications/jfp/advertise.aspx#schedule
and yeah-- huh??
You didn't get the memo? Only half as many jobs this year. Too bad, suckaz.
Quick Question:
What is the reputation of the on-line journal Symposia?
Here's what I did to prepare for the hiring season: I got a job this year (admittedly a one-year gig, but it's better than what I did last year, move back in with my parents and go unemployed for a year).
Seriously. Does anyone have any other info on JFP 179? Are they really publishing everything on the web because of the small number of jobs?
Just contacted APA. It's crossed out because it is past the deadline for schools to submit ads
I think the strike through means that deadline for submissions has passed for that issue. It's for departments, not job candidates, that the strikethrough means something.
sometimes i ger the feeling people almost WANT this year to be an especially bad year; a ready made excuse for why it did not work out for them, etc
Thanks to those who answered my question. Obviously, I'm stressed out.
