Haters Gon Hate

So, we've had a couple of posts lately that have been critical of Brian Leiter, and I expect we'll have more in the future. Just as we've had posts in the past that have given him props for what we think he's doing right, and just as we'll have more of those in the future too. That's all as it should be.

But in the last couple of weeks, comment threads are getting hijacked by some real haters. Let's call them the No Brians Club. They've obviously got beefs going back to I don't know what, and maybe they've got delusional fantasies about playing out the whole tragic Biggie/Tupac opera, or at least the Hillary Duff/Lindsay Lohan version of it.

Anyway, just a quick word to the No Brians Club: Enough. This blog's for bitching about being a grad student and getting fucked on the job market, not about Leiter. Take it somewhere else.

I only have one thing to say to you PGS... Get your laws off my body.

Naw...let's have a leiter lovefest.

Here's what I appreciate about his popular work: when I was an ignorant undergrad with aloof professors around me, he was the ONLY source of information that was even close to comprehensive. I appreciated that. Granted, I obsessed about his information too much for a while (something he warns against). But it was still valuable.

In the interest of naked self-promotion, I'd like to add that I wrote a post partly in reaction to the No Brians Club on my own fledgling blog. (If curious, click here. )It's rather self-indulgent and autobiographical (at least as much as pseudonymity will allow), but I am grateful that Leiter has been putting out the PGR (and other grad school related advice). Definitely helped me through this whole process...

For whatever it's worth, he's also quite a nice guy. I met with him as a prospective student and had a very positive experience; he was, in fact, much more candid about the department's strengths and weaknesses than many of the profs I've met with under similar circumstances.

It seems to me that the Recruiter vocation is symptomatic of bigger problems. Parents don't parent, Universities don't teach and the Free Market is utterly corrupt. Our nation is in decline and the worse it gets the more unaccountable, ignorant and expedient people and things become. These traits seem to exemplify not only the soulless recruiter but the candidate alike. Nonetheless, the recruiting industry is a self centered abscess on the corporate body. Bottom line, the people in this industry are motivated by greed, anything else they may claim is pure delusion. They may seem benign but they are the ooze covering a malignant condition, if not outright aiding it. In conclusion we can only hope to rid ourselves of this evil vocation if we first address the underlying causes for it.
